Big Thompson River, Colorado

Morning along the Big Thompson River Canyon, near Estes Park, Colorado, during a brief visit in summer of 2007. The little Olympus camera was lightweight, convenient, and borrowed from my son for my first attempts at digital. I had the manual with me and learned on the visit how to use the memory cards. First attempts indeed--the camera hours-minutes and am/pm was not properly set and I had to learn about "Raw".

Thank you for visiting! Your comments and suggestions are very much appreciated.

@Aubélia: Thanks, Aubélia! I was driving through the canyon and had to stop, since the light was just right on the water at this place.

You accomplished a fine capture with this shot. I especially like the backlit sunlight on the river. A strong action shot. Well done.

A very fine image of perfect balance technically and aesthetically.

@Ronnie 2¢: Thank you, Ronnie, for your compliment. Thanks for visiting and for commenting. I appreciate knowing when I have it "right", as well as any suggestions for improving. This one did not require much work, plus I was listening to a rushing, gurgling mountain stream while photographing.

B. Thomas from Arlington, Texas, United States

It's hard to believe that this beautiful river once flooded and took the lives of people who were caught there. Lovely shot!

11 Mar 2011 7:24pm

@B. Thomas: Yes, the river looks reasonable here. I presume you are talking about Aug. 1, 1976, when a flash flood caused terrible destruction in the canyon. Rain of 12 inches in four hours fell from a stalled front and the canyon south of Estes Park experienced a high wall (one source said up to 20 feet high in places) of flood water that scoured the canyon and caused 145 deaths. There is a lot about it online, if you"Google" the date and location. When I took this picture, it was a beautiful morning along the river.
