Gene Leahy Mall (originally known as Central Park Mall) in downtown Omaha, Dec. 4, 2011. The winter holiday season begins with a lighting ceremony on Thanksgiving eve and ends with fireworks on New Year's Eve. Fireworks are early enough so families can enjoy the festivities. Through the center of the mall is a lagoon, seen here with a skim of ice topping it.

@franz: Thanks, Franz. I am happy to see you here, and thank you for your comments! This was a fun series for me. Night time photography has been on the want-to-do list for a long time. This was an especially fine opportunity because of the snow that weekend.
@Julie L. Brown: Thanks, Julie! I am happy that you added your comments. I always like to know what people appreciate.
@Jason Politte: Thank you, Jason!! Happy New Year!
@Ronnie 2¢: Yes, those lights are just for the holiday season. They are lit on the American Thanksgiving (on the 4th Thursday of November) and turned off (and eventually removed) on New Years Eve. It is a big ceremony both times, with fireworks and music and a little speech by the mayor. I have thought a string of lights out at one time might be the worst ever. Fortunately these bulbs are the mini-lights. If one does go out, perhaps it is not very noticeable. However, the buildings downtown during this time are also lit by spotlights and if one of those goes out, everyone notices!
@Judy aka L@dybug: It's a popular area in the summer. The downtown has lots of feature areas, such as an Old Market, the ConAgra company's campus which has a lake, museums, etc. Thanks for your visits!
