First monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) I've photographed this year in the garden. It's nectaring on swamp milkweed, Aesclepias incarnata.. Monarch butterflies require milkweed plants for caterpillar food. I planted swamp milkweed last year and it has established better than expected. Monarchs, like many insects around the world, are in decline.
