August ...

While purple garden phlox are fading and dropping blossoms into the hosta, the large-leafed hosta have send up tall stems of white, very fragrant blossoms. I focus on native plants for local wildlife (in my small yard, that means pollinators and birds) but the hosta are so reliable in our changeable weather that I need to keep some of them. Also, their blossoms attract some bees as well as clearwing moths and the occasional hummingbird. Hence the garden is a blend of native and exotic. The lawn...well, the lawn has long been a healthy, mixed bag of green grass and weeds which lasts just fine without any pesticides or herbicides. White clover brings a honeybee or two and hosts the tiny Eastern-tailed blue butterfly, both caterpillar and adult.
